Since most substances like a pear for example are not submerged in solution. what would be the solution for pear cells that water would diffuse into. maybe like the air outside of it???????

Yes, the surrounding solution is the air. The pear's skin is somewhat waterproof, so the process is very slow.

For water to diffuse into the pear cells or out of the pear cells? It's not going to happen in air for a long time.. or unless you cut the pear open - then some of the water may eventually evaporate out.

hypotonic- water goes into the pear cells

hypertonic- the water would come out of the pear cells
