Columnists generally write facts and observations peppered with opinion. Editorials are opinion pieces intended to sway the opinion of the reader.

An Editorial is the official opinion expressed by the newspaper. A Columnist writes factual material written with his personal opinions, which is not necessarily the same as the newspapers.
