Easier on you? Neither of them will even deal with you! They are both top ten publishers in America. Random being ranked #1 currently and Scholastic ranked #10. Neither one deals with authors directly nor do they accept unsolicited queries. To reach an A List publisher, you need the services of an A List agent. Unsolicited queries and manuscripts are slush piled and form rejected when they get around to it.

There is no such thing as a publisher going easier on you. Publishing is a highly competitive business. In the past 20 years, the number of book published annually has doubled from 75,000 to 150,000 but the number of queries has probably quadrupled. Everybody wants to sell a book.

Your best course would be to try getting some short works published in magazines or anthologies first and build a bit of a name for yourself. While you are doing that, start learning how the traditional publishing business works so you can advocate for yourself. And develop a hide thicker than a pack of water buffalo because nobody will take it easy on you. Rejection can be brutal, and they could care less if you are 14 or 94. They buy what will make them money.

If you go to my profile, you will see I star great Q and A on publishing and writing. Go through them, pick out the ones that apply to you, print them out and start studying. It takes years to get a good break with publishers for most authors. There are very few overnight sensations.

I would say, as an author of a Memoir, that you want to pick a company in America - A book publisher in America. That is the first step. Then, find one that wants to read your manuscript - they don't all read your whole book. If you want the juicy stuff read, just send that. Otherwise it is all about money, not your good writings.
