A psychologist is a doctor of philosophy. Not a doctor with a medical degree. They have the highest academic degree that is available to achieve which gives them the right to use the name of "doctor" in their professional life. But most people don't make the distinction when addressing a PH. D. and a M.D.outside of their professional life.

Is this really a question? Sounds like the asker is just mad at psychologists. Psychologists are not medical doctors or M.D.s which is a simple fact, not an insult to the profession. It appears the asker has an extremely simplistic view of what a psychologist does (we assess & treat treat a wide array of mental illnesses & problems) as well as a distorted view of what medical doctors do. Both types of doctors make educated guesses & test theories of what's wrong before arriving at a conclusion.

Anyone with a Doctorate degree is a doctor.
To the person above, Psychologists cannot prescribe medication, you might be thinking of psychiatrists.
I think the confusion here is that physicians are referred to as doctors. However not all doctors are of the medical variety.

From what I know, psychiatrists are medical doctors (MD), whereas the psychologist usually has the Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) Yes, psychologists are called "Doctor", too.

Not necessarily, but yes, some are doctors, but not medical doctors (at least, not most of them). If a person has a license and PhD pr PsyD in psychology, then, yes the person holds a doctorate.

They may have a doctorate and be called Doctor, but they are not medical doctors. Psychiatrists, on the other hand, are medical doctors and can write prescriptions.

there is a LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and they are NOT doctors because they cannot perscribe drugs. Psychologists are in fact doctors, because they all have that ability.
I'm related to one, that's the only reason i know.
