He is probably suffering (and so are you!) from colic! Get him some "Mylacon" drops. Most stores have their own version of them. They are simethicone/antiflatulents that will quickly relieve him of his gas. If he is a formula baby, most pediatricians start babies on formula with iron. The iron will give most baby gas and constipate them too. If he is a breast baby, what YOU eat can give him gas too. Try to avoid gassy foods in your diet or use a product like "Beano" to counteract the pshyllium in fiber-full foods and vegis.
Good Luck and hope your baby feels better soon!

I've just finished reading "The Happiest Baby on the Block". You should pick it up when you get the chance. Not that you're going to get much reading done while you're little one is screaming his head off :)
The theory in the book is that newborns have a really bad case of homesickness. It teaches the "5 S's" They are:
Swaddling (really tight - don't worry you wont hurt him), Shushing (loud white noice - the vaccume, blow dryer, something - don't worry for the first month or so his ears don't hear like ours - it won't be too loud for him)
Swinging (start off with short fast movents in your arms, and once he's calmed a bit you can move him to a swing or baby bouncer)
Side/Tummy (babys' don't really enjoy time on their backs if they're cranky - it can make them have the sensation of falling. while doing all of the above keep him on his side or his tummy)
Sucking (I wouldn't recommend this for a 1 week old, as you might confuse him - nipple/fake nipple - but if you're bottle feeding it may be fine) This one can wait until he's calmed some - as he won't be able to do any sucking when he's still crying.
The idea is to do all of these at once - not just one or two at a time. it give the baby the feeling of being in your womb.
They'll alll take some practice, but better late then never! Especially if your son makes this a regular occurance.
And pick up that book when you get the chance!
Good luck - hopefully I'm a little help - and don't worry - I'm sure he's not in pain - it's not very offen that they are actually in pain when they have a crying fit - they're just too immature to know how to tell us what's wrong! He's probably just got himself really overwhelmed! Keep up the good work!

My baby did the SAME thing! IT will get better! Your baby is probably having a "frequency day" All they want to do is eat and cry! Tomorrow will be a better day! If you need a break just put the baby down in the crib and walk away for a couple of minutes. He will be FINE! Sometimes as a new mom we need a minute to regroup! Try sitting him up in the swing if you have one or try a bouncy seat! If not just hold him close to your chest and whisper in his ear. I tried everything, singing, dancing, rocking....EVERYTHING! The plus is you may get some sleep tonight because he will be exhausted all day from crying. Try to relax and remember tomorrow is another day! Good luck!

Is he pulling his legs up towards his stomach? If so it might be colic, my daughter had that problem. What about pulling his ears? Maybe he has an ear infection. Or it could be his formula, is he spitting up a lot, and real gassy? We had to try 4 different formula's before giving my daughter one that didn't upset her stomach. My daughter did that for 4 hours straight one night. All I could do after so long was sit down, rock her and cry too. Does he have Medicaid? If so call the patient advice line, seeing how it's too late to call his doctor, unless they have a 24 hour number. If he continues for more than two hours without stopping, I would take him to the ER. Thats what my daughter's doctor told me to do. Good Luck

Has she been having any vomiting? No spitting up, but projectile vomiting. What kind of formula are u using? How often do u burp during feedings? If the vomiting has been projectile and she is turning away from the bottle, it sounds like reflux. I would talk to your pediatrician and see about getting some zatac. Different types of formula effect babies differently. I know that we tend to see a lot of stomach upset with carnation goodstart, orange bottle. You may want to try giving her mylacon drops or gripe water for gassines. You can give it to her with each feeding, put in her mouth, not her bottle, and i believe not to exceed 12 doses a day. Check the bottle for that one. Also try burping her after every ounce of feeling. Sometimes swaddling helps, and if you hold her so that she is in the crook of your arm her head resting on the side of your elbow while you pat her back. The pressure on the stomach and back sometimes helps. Message me with any other questions...

My daughter had the same problem at almost one week. I noticed it was usually the worst right after she ate. We've since switched formulas twice and finally she's calm! I'd say if your baby is formula fed it might have something to do w/ the formula you're using. Before we figured out the problem was w/ the formula our pediatrician recommended running the vacuum cleaner or having her listen to the static on the TV...

My son did this to me for SIX HOURS. As soon as my husband got home from work and picked him up he was fine, and I had the WORST headache. I took him to the doctor the next day and he had nothing wrong with him. Just set him in his bassinet and walk out of the room for a few minutes to collect yourself...it does get better.

Is he pulling at his ears? Usually, babies scream like that because they are in pain. Two most common causes of pain: colic and ear infections. Some babies even teeth that early, though that is rare. Doctor time.

Maybe he's bored. Walk him around the house a little bit. Point to things and tell him about them.

Just keep nursing him, he'll get a lot of comfort from it and it always works to calm them down.
