If you plan on being sexually active then you should be on it (no matter how old that happens to be - many dumb people have sex before they are legally allowed to give consent, so if you are going to be that dumb, then at least you will be protected from pregnancy. Use condoms to be prtected against stds. )

If you are having problems with your periods then the pill will help with that - it's best to actually work out what is causing the irregularities first though, as the pill only masks the problem, it doesn't get rid of the underlying cause.

It primarily prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation - no egg, no baby. It also makes the lining of the uterus much thinner so that a fertilised egg cannot implant, and it also makes cervical mucus much thicker so sperm have a much harder time of getting through to an egg.

Because it prevents ovulation in most women, it can also solve many problems that women have with ovulation - poly cystic ovaries etc.
Because it makes the lining of the uterus much thinner it also helps relieve many period problems that women have, such has heavy flow, cramps etc.

The regulated nature of the pill means that you always know when you are going to get your period - helpful if you were always irregular and never knew when it would come - but there is no actual medical reason for having a period while on the pill anyway - the bleed that you get isn't the same thing as a natural period, it's just there to make you "feel" that the process is more natural - there's nothing natural about it.

Beach girl...

The pill can be given to regulate periods as well as prevent pregnancy...

I think 16 is young enough, or though I have friends who's daughters were 14..this is too young to be experiencing a sexual relationship and hey its illegal as well...

The hormones in the pill are released each day and stop the body from getting pregnant...to be honest its a pain in the neck to remember to take it...and then there's the extra 6lbs some put on in weight and to top it off you can get a bit bitchy at times....I stayed on it from 20-30yrs of age thats enough drugs in my lifetime that I wanted to take...I
now have an IUS this is a tiny little plastic thing inserted by a Dr and lasts for 5yrs...and the plus side is..I never have a period......

So don't be too keen to go on it...

If a minor the doctor has to have the permission from the parent to give it to the teen in many States, but otherwise one has to be 18 or older.

Please check with your State's Dept of Health as well to find out the law regarding minors when it comes to getting birth control pills.

I started taking it when I was 12, but I was sort of a special case. I took/take it for polycystic ovarian syndrome.

But whenever you start thinking about becoming sexually active, that's probably the time.

It prevents pregnancy by 99% if taken properly. You have to be careful if you go on any antibiotics because they make the pill weak and you can get pregnant. It is also given to regulate periods for females that have trouble with their cycles. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE PILL DOES NOT PREVENT STD'S !!!!!!

It's not only for if you have sex. People use it for all different reasons, and for those cases I'm pretty sure you have to be 12.
