Hi, I’m a sophomore at little nothing high school that has no clubs worth your time. There are tons of clubs for the sake of clubs, but nothing that help anything. I was thinking up starting a club for volunteering at animal shelter, and raising money for the ASPCA. I told all my friends, but they say that no one would come to a club like that. I really want to start up the club, but will be embarrassed if no one shows up. Do you think high school students would come to a club like that?

Hello,

I just joined the Interact Club. Our first meeting was today at school.

Interact is a world wide organization which helps students get going with community service. One way it helps is setting up clubs.

Instead of just volunteering at the animal shelters, you can volunteer with almost anything within your community. This way, it appeals to a much larger audience. As a club group, you can decide on what projects to do for the community. You have to do at least one local project and one international project.

Here are some ideas on what you can do with Interact:
*clean up beaches
*decorate retirement homes or hospitals for holidays
*serve the homeless
*volunteer for animal shelters
*sing Chirstmas carols during the holidays
*write to penpals from different countries
*organize town parades and events

At the moment, we are thinking of doing a haunted house at the school to raise money. Or, we could just volunteer at a local haunted house as actors.

To get people to join, make some t-shirts with the Interact seal. See if your school will put it in the announcements. Advertise by putting up fliers with benefits.

Some benefits are:
*getting recognized by the community
*making friends
*getting community hours for college and graduation
*traveling places

That sounds like a great idea for a club! I think you'd be surprised how many kids would join a club like that, particularly kids who want to become veterinarians or zoologists someday. It will require a lot of advertising around the school, though. Do you think maybe you could get sponsored by a local animal shelter so you could use them in your advertising? By that I mean you should contact your local animal shelter and explain your idea to them, and see if they'll let you use their name in posters, etc. Also, see if you can book one of their reps for a demonstration or booth or something that they can set up in your school's hallway on Club Sign-Up Day. Maybe they could even bring a couple of their animals who need homes, so the kids can see firsthand what kind of animals they'd be helping. I think a booth with a couple of adorable puppies and kittens would be very popular, don't you?

It's a wonderful idea. You have a lot to gain and nothing to loose. The saying is nothing ventured, nothing gained. Not only for the animals but for the participants as well. Others may get similar ideas for other types of volunteer activities.

If you think nobody would come you might want to suggust a community service club and then you could work for animal shelters and things like that. If you already have a club like that suggust that to them and maybe they could work with you to achieve your goal.
