My car keeps shutting down randomly where I cant start it up w/o a jump start. One time I got it tested at Kragens and they said the battery and alternator were ok. While trying to start it up, the guy tapped my starter and it fired up. But sometimes it still shuts down and doesnt start w/o a jump start. I dont think its the starter because Jump starting the car doesnt have anything to do with the starter. Btw, the car is a 91 toyota camry. What could be the problem?

Are you saying you're driving and the car stops running? That's very different than trying to get a car to start up and it won't.

As the guy tapped the starter and it started, that's more than likely the cause. What he probably did was jar the worn brushes inside the starter to the point where it would make contact to work.

If it shuts down, could be an alternator going out and not charging the battery. Some cars can run without a battery and without damage. If you start the car, pull the battery cable off and it dies, it's the alternator.

However, I think it's two problems, alt. and starter.

Wouldn't hurt to check the battery with a battery acid tester, either.

There might want to correctly be countless issues right here yet shall we commence with the finest to analyze. a million) verify the ability of the battery - use a meter for this. in case you are able to get the vehicle all started, rigidity it to AutoZone, or strengthen automobile and characteristic the charging gadget checked (loose). this assist you to carry close if the Alternator is operating. do not replace the Alternator while not having it examined first! do not replace a battery while not having it checked ! (also a loose attempt) 2) in the adventure that your battery has ability, yet each little thing is going useless once you swap the most important into the start position, yet nevertheless has sufficient ability to reveal on the dome gentle, It sounds like you've a loose connection on the battery/ starter or you've a foul battery cable. I actual have seen cables that seem ok yet they have corrosion contained in the cable. What you are able to do to analyze is do away with the terminal from the battery and wiggle the cable to ascertain if any "eco-friendly fluffy" cloth comes out (corrosion). in case you do, you are able to ususally replace this cable inexpensively. in case you come across this, nevertheless have the checks above carried out. 3) remember, A vehicles taking off gadget is worry-free in case you do no longer overlook that a taking off gadget has: a) battery b) starter c) alternator/ regulator (to recharge the battery) d) cables to connect the above 4) There are some extra issues that would want to reason an project, like impartial protection swap, yet from what you defined i don't think of it is your problem. do not only replace elements while not having them examined. An Alternator might want to be intense priced ($one hundred fifty) so do not replace it till you understand this is undesirable. you've an effortless problem, so don't be to annoying. once you carry out slightly technique of elimination, you are able to immediately ascertain the position the project is. only save in ideas word #3 sturdy success!

If your battery and cables deliver the correct power to the starter motor and the starter motor doesn't run, then by definition you have a bad solenoid or starter motor itself. The ignition switch tells the starter solenoid to switch on and start the motor. Either the starter motor assembly works reliably or not. If not, replace it.

Sounds like you have a bad cable somewhere. Check all the connections from the battery to the starter and all the grounds to. Maybe take them off and clean them.

Save yourself a lot of money and replace the starter with a re-manufactured AC Delco unit. It'll cost hundreds of dollars less than the outrageous prices off-shore car companies charge for new parts.
The AC Delco re-man. will have a lifetime warranty, something Toyota forgets when they charge $500.- $600. for one of their factory NIPPON starters.

My Toyota when I owned it used to do that. It was also a 91. It was the fusible link to the alternator.
