I think New York is very important to the league, no matter how bad they do, the seats for the most part will be full.
But IMO the most important American team needed to succeed is Chicago. If they could consistently ice good teams there like New Jersey, Colorado, and Detroit have, it would bring so many fans back to the NHL. I think any large market teams success is important to the NHL.

The New York City market was too small for two teams and the Brooklyn Americans ended up as a AHL team in Rochester. That being said, NYC is still a good place for hockey.

Largest NHL market... one of the Original six- I'd say that they're pretty important in terms of overall sales and promotion of the league. But they tend to do okay by buying good teams....

Chicago does need a good team it seems like it has been forever.. this is a major northern city that contantly puts out weak teams..
the flyers need to be good too and they almost always are..after i bad year it looks like they will be back in the hunt again.. Philadelphia supports their teams n the flyers shuld get good ratings compared to other teams in the country

Success necessary in NY? Didn't seem so for 50 odd years so doesn't seem to matter. Hockey is solid in the big apple. Rangers could suit up the Ice Capades girls and the fans would still show up and boo them.
