There are twice as many people behind me as ahead of me. The number of people in line is seven more than the number of people ahead of me. How many people are in line?

Please help:

I know the euation starts something like this 2x+ 1 (me) = and what else?

desperate.

Let
x = number of people ahead of you

Set the two expressions for the number of people in line equal to each other.

x + 1 + 2x = x + 7
3x + 1 = x + 7
2x = 6
x = 3

The number of people in line is:

x + 7 = 3 + 7 = 10

Good gracious! No wonder you're confused.
Let's go slowly.
Let x= the people in front of you
There as twice as many behind you as there are ahead of you. That must be 2x
So, those behind +those ahead, plus you, must be
x+2x+1.
The number of people in line is seven more than the people ahead of you. That must be x+7
So, x+2x+1=x+7. Makes sense to me!
3x+1=x+7
3x-x=7-1
2x=6
x=3
How many in the line up? You can get this by substituting 3 for x in either of the 2 expressions for
the length of the line.
x+2x+1 gives 3+6+1, =10
x+7 gives 3+7, =10
Logic says 3 in front, 6 behind, and me=10

I'd say Northstar got it right. It's 10

the first answer is correct.

let x be the number of people infront of you
let y be the number of peope behind you

y = 2x

the number of people in the line is x + y + you
which is x + y + 1

so x + y + 1 = 7 + x

simplify
y + 1 = 7
y = 6

we know that y = 2x
6 = 2x
x = 3

6 + 3 + 1 (including you) = 10 people

l= 2p + p + 1
l= 7 + 2p

i used the elimination one
3p - l + 1
- 2p - l + 7
__________
p+0 - 6
0= p-6
p= 6

l= 2(6) + (6) + 1
l= 19

l= 7 + 2(6)
l=19

19 people in line

FOR THE FIRST PERSON TO ANSWER: [WHY YOU MESSED UP]
4 first person to answer, and the persn that asked this question, the way you did it was correct but you forgot the part where it said the number of people in line is sever more than the number of people ahead. and the number of people ahead is TWICE the number of people behind. you should have let p stand for the number of people behind and 2p the number of people in front. that means it would look like

2p + p + 1 = 7 + 2p
3p + 1 = 7 + 2p
p + 1 = 7
p = 6

if you were going to let p= the number of people ahead of you then the number of people behind you would be 1/2p or p/2

the first answer was correct
A = people ahead of you
people behind you is twice as many so "2A"
total = A +1(thats you) +2A
L = line
L= 3A + 1

We also know that L = A + 7
L = L ... so:
A+7 = 3A +1
+7 -1 = 3A -A
6 = 2A
A = 3
... there are3 people in front of you, twice that number behind you (6), plus you(1) = 10

The second person to answer got this reversed "There are twice as many people behind me as ahead of me."
They assumed it was twice as many people ahead of me as behind me")
