Virus can neither be said as living or non-living they a different kind of organisms that remain intact or remain as a non-living thing without any reproductoin or any kind of movement when it is outside a living cell.
But when it is in a living cell it get into the DNA of the cell itself and it acts as it wishes in the cell[like reproducing, infecting, transmitting to other cells etc.,]
Since they get into the cells it often very hard to find them

living things can replicate. So virus is living. Although it cant replicate outside but it can inside the organism, outside it is in dormant stage. it is a temporary phase of its life cycle.. just like seed which under unfavorable cnditions can;t grow, it needs water and other things, but this does not mean that seed is nonliving. Such is the case with virus. furthermore virus under unfavorable conditions forms a coat around itself. how can nonliving things sense unfavorable conditions.

Much depends on how you look at life.Life is nothing but a special arrangement of the elements and in suirable environment it comes to life. Life is supposed to have originated--the first life-because the special arrangements of the ingriendents of lifewhich itself was fortuious -occured giving rise to life. The virus also, so to say come to life when this precondition is fulfilled by its coming into contact with likving beings. It has been said that even a diamond has a perfect combination to LIfe but lacks one vital factor and that why its is innimae.

Many scientists consider viruses to be nonliving because:
1. They are not made of cells, and the cell theory says that all living things are made of cells.
2. Viruses do not use energy.
3. Viruses have no processes of their own. The viral DNA directs the host cell to perform all the processes of replicating viruses. These processes use the host cell's energy and the host cell's materials.

I agree with the above responses.
It really depends on who you ask these days, and a new definition of "life" and/or "non-life" may be on the horizon.
I personally think that viruses are non-living, but very well protected pieces of genetic material that add to the diversity of life in living entities.
Hope this helps, and its a great question.
Pass on the good Karma!
