When his theme comes along with the society's interests. Philosophers of the past wouldn't be famous enough if their books were written now. Also if the philosopher wants to persuade and not find the truth he will be more influential. Oratorical speech is not the way to find the truth but is a good way to have influence to people.

It is their great contributions on earth. Plato gives birth to Philosophy and Aristotle to Science. These two great philosophers of all times are a very good examples of the most influential philisophers not to mention the contributions made by Nietsche, Russel, Bergson, Locke, Bacon, Spinoza, Voltaire, Kant, Dewey, James, Spencer and Schopenhauer.

They are influential when their words inspire others to think and discover things in their lives. The wisdom they speak that allows people to read into it what they need to get from it.

When they have a good line of s.h.i.t. that most people will believe and that 'seems to' make sense (if you don't look too closely at it) and which makes people 'feel good' about themselves or the World around them.
