I walked into the children's department of a library to use the computer for a printjob. The librarian told me that I cannot use the computer because "children need to use it for homework." There is no posting/message that says that. One computer was vacant and no one else was using it. She told me to go downstairs into the main library and use the computers there. I am 16 years old and no one in the past told me that I could not use a computer in the children's department. Should I consult the librarian's boss about the matter?

Why not go to the downstairs lab and do the print job? It sounds like you were being too lazy to do a bit of extra walking. There is a reason why they don't want adults and teenagers using computers that are designated for the children. These people are more inclined to look up stuff that the library does not want the kids exposed to. Also, there is the protection of the kids from sexual predators and other lowlifes that prey upon kids. Next time, go and use the main computers and don't wander into the kids section.

No. Libraries with space often have multiple departments, and these departments exist to service specific persons. In most libraries, "kids" means NOT teen agers. It means 12 and under. These computers, if Internet enabled, are almost ALWAYS filtered with "white list" type website capability.

You could consult the Library Director, and express your displeasure, but unless your displeasure is echoed by the community as a whole, it's just your displeasure.

Absolutely fair. I'm sure the children aren't allowed to use the main library computers and are sent to the children's department. Grow up and say "Thank you for the information" to the librarian.
