For your purpose, you need a dual output video card, or you can just install a second video card into your system. Many operating systems (like Windows) will automaticly configure the second video card for dual display purposes. You can get an old/plain video card from a used computer parts store for very cheap and it will work just fine next to your current AGP or PCI-E card. If your computer is using on-board video that is built into the motherboard, then you can just get the cheap-o card and use it in conjunction with your motherboard's video out.
A good KVM switch that others have mentioned is for switch that allows a single keyboard/mouse/monitor to be used with multiple computers. That's not what you were asking about.

You need to add a dual head video card. These are freely available at most computing stores or off the web.
Remove your old video drivers, Install the card. If you had onboard video, then you might need to disable that in the BIOS setup. Connect each monitor to an output on the new video card, reboot and install the new drivers.
If both screens do not automatically come up in an extended desktop mode, or if they are the wrong way round, then open up the display properties > Settings tab. Make sure both screens are enabled in extended desktop modes, and are at the correct resolution. To make the virtual desktop match the locations of the monitors just drag and drop the monitor positions in the window until they match the relative physical locations of the monitors.
I you want to see one spreadsheet across two monitors then you will need to not maximize the spreadsheet window. Drag the corners so that it fills the area you want over the two screens. If you maximize it will just maximize to one monitor screen.

You will need a video card that has the ability to plug in 2 monitors. They are fairly cheap ($30 - $90 or more) and easy to install.

You can use a dual outlet video card or two video cards.
KVM switches are used to switch between two computers on 1 screen.

I work in tech support...and it is a KVM switch like the others have mentioned. You'll have only one tower, one mouse, and one keyboard but two monitors.

it's nothing to do with the cpu, you need either a kvm switch to use another monitor or a video card that supports two monitors simultaneously..
