Get a socket that is designed to remove bolt heads that are worn/rounded. That should remove it without causeing more damage or debries. Vise grips will not fit into the spark plug well of a 91 Miata. So if a spark plug tip designed for rounded or worn plugs won't work you looking at a shop getting it out for you. It sounds like the previous owner or shop tightened the plug down far too tight.

I had to brake the insulator out of the plug and use an easy out.
I also had to remove the head to get the debris out.
There is a chance that you have debri keeping you from getting the socket down on the plug. Try to get that mess out and try a socket again. This will be easier then what I had to go through.

Old Man Dirt knows his stuff on these Miatas. One thing I noticed not mentioned that you might want to check is also the cam position sensor. If its bad the car will crank but not fire up.

Sears sells a socket to remove bolts with rounded corners.

If you can get to the metal part with visegrips, lock on and break it loose..

if you cross-threaded it, get it out best you can, repair w/Helicoil

IF YOU ROUNDED OUT THE PLUG, THEN YOU WILL BE ABLE TO BUY A SPECIAL SOCKET THAT WILL REMOVE DAMAGED ITEMS LIKE THIS, ALSO SPRAY SOME PENETRATING FLUID ON IT AS WELL.
