Most places still take checks. However, the check is collected one of 2 ways.
1. The check is electronically scanned and the information is transmitted to the bank in much the same way as a debit card transaction.
2. The check is physically sent to the bank. In this case, more people actually SEE the check with you name, address and account number.

Yes most places take checks but I don't think it is safer than using a debit card.Although some places don't take debit cards but do take checks.I personally prefer using a debit card.

I suggest getting a credit card as they are the safest. You can just charge back if you see something you did not pay for. Debit Card, some banks are good and gets your money back on illegal purchases, but some do not.
