Most will say their payroll and I would like to answer that.
1. George has been know to over pay players which inflates the payroll. ( Roger Clemens was simply waaaaay over paid. )
2. The Yankees have a lot of players in the fat part of their contracts.
3. They Yankees get accused of not using their farm system which is a bunch of crap if people were to actually take the time and look back at the past rosters.

1. George Steinbrenner. He's always treated people like dirt. While I appreciate his will to win, and his willingness to spend money toward that goal, his middle name hasn't been class along the way. I'm sorry he's sick now -- wouldn't wish that on anyone -- but even some diehard Yankee fans probably wouldn't want to work for him. Ask the many public relations directors who have worked there.
2. Unlimited resources. The Yankees were merely around the top of the league in payroll until 2000, when the luxury tax came in. You didn't hear the arguments about finances during the Yankees run at the end of the 1990's. Those were excellent teams, filled with good, tough ballplayers. Since then the Yankees have basically thrown money at their problems, and it still hasn't gotten them a title. Lately, the team has learned a bit of a lesson and kept some of its young players. The last time the Yankees did that (Jeter, Rivera, Posada, Williams), things worked out pretty well. We'll see how patient this bunch is now.
3. Media. The New York media is quick to sing the praises of the Yankees and think that everyone in the country is anxious to hear about them. Murray Chass of the New York Times is example number one. And how many books on the team and its players do we really need?
4. Fans. There are plenty of loyal fans who suffered through the Horace Clarke years in the 1960's and 1970's, and some who went through the 1981-1994 period following their team. No problem with that. But there is a certain segment of bandwagon jumpers who root for the Yankees because they often win. That's true in my town, 400 miles from New York. They also are pretty humorless in some cases, and refuse to believe that they aren't entitled to win every year. And let's face it -- how many hits did A-Rod need to prove to the fan base that he was "a true Yankee," whatever that means?
5. It's fun. As a friend of mine put it, "When the Yankees lose, I feel like a well-shaken can of pop." New York City is one of the greatest cities on earth, way ahead of the rest of America. It's the business capital of the world, and perhaps the hub of the theater world-wide. Always nice to knock it down a notch in baseball, which doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
I have all the respect in the world for many of the Yankees. Joe Torre can manage my team any time. Jeter is a Hall of Fame hitter. Rivera has been the best reliever, long term ever. A-Rod would have been the best shortstop ever had he just stayed there. When you beat them, you are beating someone good.

I don't think it's hate. I mean who could possibly hate such a rich history that the Yankees have. It's impossible to not appreciate and respect their past. I think it's more that a lot of people are annoyed because the Yanks are mentioned so much in the media. It's not the Yankees' fault per say but what can you do. It's like that popular kid in school that's so loved. You wish you had that kind of attention once in awhile especially when you're doing pretty well for yourself. Kind of unfair. Rich history? Championships? Talent? New York? Heck your location, New York explains it all! It's a 100% guarantee that you are met with harsh words and high expectations. An eye for an eye.. well ... it doesn't really apply here but.. uhh oh! Give and Take! Wait that doesn't make sense either! Ah you know what I mean :P

Jealousy is one reason & the fact they have the better players & they don't have losing seasons. If fans of other team hate them because George can afford to pay top $$$, then maybe the other owners shouldn't be so cheap & pay players more $$$. Tiger fans, 2 winning seasons after 15 or 16 losing seasons, Angel fans win one World Series after how many losing seasons. Face reality, the Yankees are good because George pays well. Hate them all you want but, the Yankees unlike most of your teams, consistantly win 90 plus games a year. Yankees will always be a great team, whether you like them or hate them.

I don't hate the Yankees because they win, in every sport there is a team that wins the most. I hate them because of their payroll. The fact that the Marlins spend 27 million and the Yankees spend 200 million. I know it is not the fault of the Yankee fans or the organization itself, I just do not like it and I think it is bad for baseball and that it will eventually cause problems when the fans of teams like Pittsburg and Kansas City figure out they are never going to win and the fans start to never comeback.

I will discredit then givve NYY their due credit.I hated the Yankees when we (Cleveland) played them in 1997 and knocked them out of the playoffs. I hated them more in 1998 when they knocked us out. We play them Rd. 1 this year-finally riding a hot streak when we face them and being able to set up our rotation against them....so I hate 'em still. Arod is pompous as hell, there is 1 good reason-you will agree when he bolts for Chicago next year, don't worry. I actually am a huge Jeter fan, when we don't face him!!He plays hard and has a champions heart. Clemens is an arrogant windbag who I hope to hell pitches in the ALDS....he is tailor made for those Indians fastball hitters they got. The guy needs to hang it up already. Cashman has really replenished the farm sytem well to his credit-in spite of you fool owner who I'm sure behind the scenes was on the verge of trading every quality farm hand you have for the next old time has been wash-up, before trade dealines the last 2-3 years. Truth be told-the Yankees for the last 5-6 years have had no heart other then Jeter and Rivera and Posada (maybe)...that team use to play with heart-Tino Martinez, Scott Brossius, Paul O'Neill, Bernie Williams, David Cone---those guys were warriors. You don't have that chemistry anymore. Atleast admit that. This is my personal explanation.

It's not that i hate the yankees it's the people and the media paying WAAAY too much attention to them.. now that's annoying. watching too much a rod homerun analyzations make ur head spin. that's when i get annoyed at the people who keep on showing yankee highlights.. but then again. boston gets a lot of coverage too so.. well whatever
yanks play their game and use their ben franklins like money grows on trees. and that's fine with me! the yanks have a different style of playing than i'm used to (angel fan.. what a difference huh? ;)
yanks are good i respect them. i mean i like jeter :)
but sometimes you kinda get tired when that's all you hear about..

Unfortunately, I think people hate those who have what they strive to have or want. Every baseball fan would love to say their team has 26 WS rings or that their team is in the chase every year. I am not sure there is a team that can come close to that.
In addition, many people like to see the mighty fall and root for the underdog. Another reason.
In addition, unless you are a fan, people generally do not like to see the same team win all the time. In all sports, we love to see a repeat or a three-peat -- but after two or three everyone would like to think that someone else can get the brass ring.
That all being said - other reasons include the NY media snobbery to all other teams; the impression that they are best all the time no matter what (while they are good - they are not the best always); and the fact that fans that follow them be-little and condescend other teams probably are other reason they are hated.
While not a huge fan (I follow another AL team), I like the AL for baseball. And since my team will not be in the playoffs this year - if the Yanks make it to the series, I will root for them. But as for the playoffs -- I just want to see the Yanks and Red Sox play because it's always fun to see the rivalry.

First off, they did not win their championships the same way other teams did. They bought off the best players from each team, by offering them loads more money than the home team would pay for them. This lead to lots of people losing their favorite player to the Yankees, like Roger Clemens, Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu, A-Rod, etc. They hold an advantage over a lot of teams and ruin the competitiveness with their team of All-Stars. Does this explain enough for you?

As a fan of any other team - you've probably seen one of your favorite players leave you - for the Yankees and more money. There needs to be a salary cap in baseball. The Yankees make baseball less fair. Rather than building a team from the ground up - they just buy players other teams have developed.
It's no fun to cheer for Goliath.
