obituary's second album 'cause of death' has that cool pic of a body kinda tied/webbed to a tree, which has a pile of skulls at the foot of it, bloody, horny white spikes sticking out of the ground- all against a backdrop of a huge red reptile/amphibian eye and a sliver crescent of moon hanging in a jet-black sky? here's a link...

i'm sure i heard somewhere that it was commissioned for a h.p. lovecraft novel.

Michael Whelan is the artist and I believe it was used for the cover of one of Lovecraft's novel that was published by Ballantine/Del Rey. I don't which book but I believe it had nightmare in the title.
