Lazy people! If you want to fix the one you have, they sell repair kits and it's not that hard to fix. I fixed one for about 10 bucks one time. They have brushes and I believe a rectifier that is replaceable. Some/most are now internally regulated and thats what you're paying alot for. If you know it's junk, see if they have a repair kit for a reasonable price and try it out. They give instructions. It's not rocket science, give it a try. Good luck!

if you can establish the bearings are sound .the other thing you need to check is the brushes and the surfaces they run on are ok.make sure that its got an initial feed to power up the windings.if you get the engine started up and your ignition light stays on the diode inside is gone'this can be replaced.check the output which on a typical 12 volt system should be around 14 \15volts.

Alternators are very complicated electromechanical devices, so unfortunately there's no single good answer to your question.
If your alternator isn't working, then perhaps the best solution is to have a mechanic replace it.

generally it costs more in time and labor to fix an alternator than replace it. good luck

being cheap just makes things harder
just buy a new one
best investment then having to get a jump start all the time
