DC was chosen because it was in the center of the US.

It was half-way between the north and south...

(and it had good water access)

One factor was the thought that the capital city should be built AS a capital city... So, they created a new one, rather than trying to build the necessary "capital city infrastructure" into an existing city.

George Washington took the oath of office from the balcony of New York City's old city hall. He had to help decide on a permanent location for the capital.
As part of a compromise, it was decided that the capital would move to Philadelphia, in 1791, for 10 years and then to a suitable permanent location on the Potomac River. Washington chose an area that included land from Maryland and Virginia.
Later, the Virginia land was annexed back to Virginia.
Congress was scheduled to meet in the new capital on the first Monday in December, 1800.

Washington, District of Columbia was established on July 16, 1790 from part of Virginia.

you must not know US history very well.

DC was the planned site for the government from day 1

but there was nothing there to put the government in so they needed a temporary capitol untill DC was built.

There for NYC was used.
