It is highly unlikely that someone can pull this off. In order to collect disability, there needs to be ample medical documentation. In order to establish a diagnosis of mental retardation (of which there are different levels), various IQ and diagnostic tests would likely be administered. You may think that those are easy to fake, but a psychologist would see right through that! Additionally, there are often organic and neurological causes for mental retardation which are detectable through physical examination.

I used to be a social worker for individuals with developmental disabilities, and they had a hard time collecting disability even though they had the psychological/medical testing to back their disability. It was absurd.
I recall one incident where one of my clients was blind, had an IQ of 45 and the adaptive skills of your average three year old. She kept getting turned down for SSI. I finally drove her to the local SSA office and demanded that they either hire her or at least allow her to fill out an application, since she was deemed capable of working by their offices. Needless to say, she got her SSI plus retro pay. I think it was the constant drooling and moaning that finally got them rethinking the whole thing....

Absolutely! All you need is a compliant parent, teacher and psychologist. Beware, though, because you will be labeled and unable to enjoy the things in life that require intelligence, otherwise you will be exposed for fraud.

Yes it is possible to try,but I wouldn't advise it as you could get into serious trouble if you get found out-which is likely as they monitor and checkup on people to see how they are getting on and sometimes they even monitor you secretly without you knowing. Also there are people with real disabilities who wouldn't like to be in that position if they had the choice.
