Hi there,
I'm 36 weeks pregnant and went for a check up today.
Midwife said I had protein in my urine which is a sign of infection.
I told her I had protein in my urine with my first pregnancy and my my baby was induced 5 days after my due date as a precautionary measure.
The midwife told me that it was more common to have protein in the urine with first pregnancies?!
Also my blood pressure is low at 90/60, and iron count is low also.

What does this all mean? If the protein stays in my urine will I be induced again if I go over my due date???

Sophia

I had this problem a lot with baby 4, the protein can indicate a Urine Infection that will probably need treatment with antibiotics. (They gave me amoxcillin which isn't harmful to baby). I think it can also indicate pre-eclampsia (which is more common in 1st pregnancies) but usually this is combined with a high BPand sometimes swelling of the hands and or ankles. Not sure aboout the low BP, but you might need iron tablets and/or diet change to comat the iron levels.

If they do suspect pre-eclampsia then I always think its best to be on the safe side regarding induction but hopefully it will just be a simple infection that can be treated and you can progress as normal. Good Luck!

Protein in your urine is actually generally a sign of preeclampsia. And generally, if severe enough, the mother is induced to prevent severe illness/death in the mother and child. Though, preeclampsia is generally associated with high blood pressure, not low blood pressure.
I'd be aware of the other symptoms, which include abdominal pain, visual disturbances [such as seeing spots] and headaches. These are for severe preeclampsia, and should you have any of these symptoms I'd call your midwife immediately.
I've NEVER heard that it was common to have protein in the urine with any pregnancy. But, I'm not a midwife or a doctor.
It's not uncommon to be induced if you go over your due date regardless, though. About two weeks after your due date the placenta starts to die. It's not meant to support the baby indefinitely. Most doctors will induce to prevent complications, such as that, and a large baby that you'll be unable to deliver vaginally.
Best of luck.

High levels of protein in your urine are an indication of renal trouble. In essence is signals that your kidneys are over taxed and your body is in danger of over toxifying. This can lead to the death of the unborn, and complete renal failure and death of the mother.

Some times its something as simple as a UTI or kidney infection.

however, many people tend to have naturally higher levels of protein in their urine due to the way their body functions, the natural state of their renal glands and system, and even things like their diet.

Fresh pineapple actually helps your body metabolize and break down protein in the digestive system, so it doesnt have time to collect in the kidney. Eating enough fiber and cutting your salt intake can help as well.

If you go over your due date you will be induced whether you have protein or not, its common practice to not allow women to go more than 5 days over due, especially on subsequent pregnancies.

Let your doctor know your concerns, and discuss what you can do to avoid induction at the end of your pregnancy.

Your particular situation might differ from the norm.
