It sure does, but by how much?

It most certainly is an outlet for people "too busy" to effectively go out and try to actually make a difference. I am saddened by the apathy.

As you very well know Jim, people on this site tend to defend their positions in a way that they wouldn't have the gonads to do face to face.

My guess is 40% of the users are intelligent and can hold debate, the other 60% needs to get laid, badly.

I'm not real sure how to take your question.
Yes this site if an outlet for trolls (I've been call that because I didn't agree with the rest of the other answers).
The part I don't understand about your question is the desire for change.
I think, in part, this is part of our problems. There was a time when people had respect for each other. Being responsible for your own actions was something you could be proud of and where caring for your family gained you respect.

I think these are valuse that have been lost.

Trolls don't need this site for an outlet. They have the under side of bridges. Nope. I think people's ire is up and this reflects a true desire for change on the part of most on here.

Maybe that's the problem. Let's assume that the composition of YA members is consistent with the composition of the population (not a fat chance but...). It means that the population is mostly trolls. So, there's no real desire for change. It's just a minority.

I don't see that anyway. Most people is asking reasonable questions with good intentions and answering with the same spirit. Some may be highly misguided but the way to handle that is to give your best answer, be clear and detailed with it.
Forget about the trolls.

I think the desire for change in this country can be seen in approval ratings for the Congress and the President.

YA is an outlet for nutjobs and freaks like myself.

There are much better outlets on the internet for trolling but most are blocked by corporate firewalls. That's why many are on here while at work.

YA provides a great public service to America babysitting liberal out of work trolls still living with their parents. They have a place to congregate besides hanging out on those gay porn web sites all day.

The blocking feature needs to be altered. Not only should they not allow a troll to answer your questions, but there should also be a feature that disables seeing them answer or ask questions.

To an extent it is true but we don't want to advocate censorship... so Yahoo has given us the ability to block those with whom we don't want to interact.
I don't use that feature, but it would serve that purpose
