I went to a garage here locally and they want to charge me 950.00 dollars, and when I looked the parts up they were all under 20.00 so I'm kind of worried that I am getting ripped off!

Are they head gaskets or Valve cover gaskets or a different one completely? If its head or valve covers, those are alot of work to replace. A bunch of things need to come out to replace those.

if it's just a therostate and the therostae gasket, plus any needed anti freeze and labor you should be able to get it done for around a hundred or a little less, shouldn't take no more than an hours worth of labor to do it correctly, Sounds like someone is triny to hose you or they just were to afraid to tell you they didn't know how to do it or didn't want your business.

If just the thermostat and it's gasket are involved, about $50 at a shop.

If there is more work involved(blown headgasket, cracked head, ) because of overheating it could cost that much...
