Actually in the ER that I worked we did x-ray toes. Yes if it swells it is a good sign that it is broken. Make sure your not losing circulation to the toe. you can do this by pressing down on the nail bed of that toe and seeing if after you press down the white from pressing down disappears. If it disappears under 3 seconds than you have good circulation to your toe. If your circulation is fine, if you're still questioning if it's broken and don't want to go to the doctor. Buy some kurlex gauze (long wrappable gauze) from your local Target, Walmart, or drug store. Wrap your injured toe with a good toe. Your good toe will act as a splint for your big toe. And take your favorite non-opioid medicine, like ibuprophen (advil) which is an anti-inflammatory. You can take up to 800mg 3 times a day. But if you have any stomach issues, take a prevacid along with the ibuprophen.

It doesn't matter, because there is no treatment for a broken toe. Tape the painful toe to the next toe to keep it from moving. Put some ice on it for the 1st 24-48 hours after the injury (2-3 times a day). Then use heat the same way. It should heal fairly quickly.

I've broken 5 of my toes before and the first time was my big toe. Went to the doctor and they didn't do anything. Trust me, even if your toe is pretty crooked they really won't do anything except for the meds. The whole top of my foot turned black and blue and all they told me to do was tape it up, but that hurt too damn much...The pain lasted about a week with my big toe, but the two toes next to it I broke twice each at the same time...the pain lasted for 2 days max. GOOD LUCK!!!

General signs and symptoms are swelling, pain, stiffness, bruising and deformity.
Two people (hi, bmac!) have already given you great information and one of them is a fellow nurse (Nurse Lisa). Read it again. Then buddy tape the toe and take Tylenol or whatever. Try to stay off that foot as much as you can, elevate it and apply ice.
However, if you have gross deformity of the toe, you may need to have the fracture reduced to avoid complications. In this case, see your doctor. If you have any open areas on the toe, see your doctor. If the symptoms are severe, or if the toe involved is not the little toe, you may need casting to insure proper alignment of the bone ends. See your doctor.
Toe fractures take about 6 weeks to heal. Note to "Monkey Mom": Toe fractures don't heal any more quickly than any other fx.

Really---even if your toe is broken, there is nothing the doctor can do for you. All they would do is "buddy-tape" it to the toe next to it for support and tell you to rest it. If it hurts a lot to walk, then you can either borrow some crutches or get some at a pharmacy. They don't give you a cast for broken toes. Now, if the pain won't subside with Motrin, then you may want to see your doctor to get something stronger.

Greek, good answers already in place. I second the one about them not doing anything unless it's your big toe. However, if the bones are totally not aligned, like the broken ends beside one another or something, they may want to see it and line things up for you.

Yes, we x-ray broken toes. But the others are right, if a toe is broken, usually it is taped to the toe next to it to hold it in place.

You can't, unless you have x-ray vision :)
Even if you did break it, there's not much the Dr. is going to do for it - unless it's like hanging off your foot. Try "buddy taping" it to the next toe for a few days and resting/icing it.

I broke 2 of my toes earlier this year. My doctor told me that if the toe bruises, that is a sure sign of a fracture.
If it is swollen, bruised, you can't bend it...you probably broke it.

if it swells and bruises really badly (like to the point of going black). unless its your big toe, going to the doctor is pretty pointless because they won't x-ray toes
