Very. Works like a charm. If you have the right dosage; you may have to try more than one kind.
My doc prefers Nuvaring because it is inserted in the vagina so it gives off constant hormones, not like a pill that will cause levels to spike when you take the pill. And I use them constantly so I don't have to mess with all that bleeding and cramping stuff. Ahhhhh.

There are many different types of birth control, including IUD, diaphragm etc - but I think you are probably talking about the birth control PILL. This doesn't regulate your period - it stops your period cycle entirely, but provides you with a regular bleeding which results from the withdrawal of the hormone. So it is completely ineffective in regulating your real menstrual cycle - but usually very effective in replacing your real hormonal changes with a false set of hormones which produce a regular withdrawal bleeding. Some people resume their natural cycle quite quickly after stopping the pill, while for others it can take a long time. For some, their natural cycle resumes just as it always was - for others, it may be more regular simply because they have got older anyway.

If you are wanting to 'regulate' your periods simply because they are irregular, the pill is a disastrous solution, since it prevents your body establishing its own natural cycle. Some people never have very regular periods; but most woman find that their cycle settles down by their early twenties.
