He was a very complex man who made many contributions to science, impossible to summarize in a few paragraphs. Do a Google search on his name. He was one of the very first experimental physicists, and a major pioneer in astronomy, the first to apply the new invention of the telescope to the heavens, discovering that the Milky Way was made of stars, that Jupiter had four moons in orbit around it, that the Moon had mountains and craters, and was not the perfect smooth sphere that had been proposed. He was also one of the first popularizers of science, writing books in Italian rather than Latin so that anyone could read them; this was primarily what got him into trouble with the Roman Catholic Church.

Not only did he use a telescope to discover new things about the planets and stars, he also made extremely important discoveries about how things fall. He discovered that how fast they fall does not depend on what they are made out of or how heavy they are. And that as things fall they speed up in a very predictable. Newton later expanded on that work to come up with his law of gravity. This allowed Newton to show that gravity is what causes the planets to move as they do. Prior to that all people could do is measure the movement of the planets without knowing why they moved as they did.
