Why should a microscope slide/cover slip be held by it's edges?

In order not to leave contaminants on the surfaces. The same reason for handling CD's, DVD's, and LP's (remember those?)

this is to avoid putting fingerprints on the slide. Instead of seeing the specimen, you might see fingerprints and think that it is a part of the specimen you are viewing.
