I think it's because people don't take their pill at the same time everyday like they should. It's hard to consistently take the pill everyday at the same time. So when you don't, the hormones that prevent you from getting pregnant aren't there and allow your egg to be fertilized by the sperm that can live inside of you for up to 5 days from the day of intercourse.

There are several reasons for becoming pregnant while on the pill. One is that the directions were not followed. You have to follow the directions with ANY form of contraception. Another is that illness will influence hormones. The pill is a hormone based method of contraception. Some medications will cause the pill to not work. Some women and many men are unaware of these exceptions.
Be diligent following instructions. If you fail to take the pill, then use an additional form of contraception such as a condom until back in "balance". If you are ill or taking medicine, then know the potential side effects. Use additional protection if there is a possible interaction.
The last reason that the pill fails is that it happens. It is rare, but it does happen. Condoms break, people get sick, hurricanes come, and the pill does fail. Good luck! Try not to worry to much about it. It really is a good method.

Sorry, I am a 60 year old boy and will not get preg. The most of the 1% of girls get preg simply forgot a pill. You see there is an optimization between two facts, the less hormons are in the pill the less your body is disturbed by the pill. You see this hormones make your body beliefe you are pregnant. The less hormones are in the pill the less you feel pregnant. At the other hand side if you forget the pill you will have an ovulation. Statistically it is so, if you take the pill and forgot one, more ovulation take place. Congratulation for triplets!!!
The percentage the pill does not work is extreme less.

One reason the women are getting pregnant is because they accidentally skip a day or take the pill at different times each day. Taken as prescribed, it is 99% effective. The 1% are the women for whom the pill just doesn't work (like my ex MIL. Her first two pregnancies occurred on the pill).
I can't take the pill. Progesterone and my body do not get along at all. My mom is also allergic to it.
Some women forget that some medications (like antibiotics) cause the effectiveness of the pill to plummet. Other women take herbal remedies but aren't aware they can interfere.
And then there are some women who are getting pregnant "on the pill" but aren't really on the pill. There are dishonest women in the world, I'm sad to say, who would rather trap a man with pregnancy than with good home-cooking like it used to be. *sigh*
So, if you do take the pill, make sure you take it every single day at the same time. If you forget to take your pill, take it as soon as you remember or take both the next time you are due for a dose. It would help to let your doctor know before you do this, but it is usually what they recommend when you accidentally skip a day.

They base those studies on women who take the pill everyday, never miss a pill and do everything correct. The women that get pregnant off the pill either just happened to and was doing things correctly, missed a pill or more, just started the pill and had been taking it for less than a month or two, was taking medications that can cause the pill to work less effectively etc.
I have gotten pregnant off the patch but not the pill.
Also some that do it all depends on the birth control pill too and how high or low of dose the pill is.

That 1% - 2% is only true if you use the pill correctly 100% of the time. I became pregnant while on the pill AND while using a condom. I had taken my low-dose birth control an hour or two later than I was suppose to, so we used a condom to be "safe". 5 weeks later I realized I was late and took a pregnancy test. I now have a beautiful 8 week old baby boy. lol

Its a 1% chance under ideal conditions. How many people actually take the pill at the exact same time every day without fail? Plus some of the lower hormone pills actually have a higher chance with most people. I have gotten pregnant on pills once, but most people assume 3 times since I have had 3 "oops" pregnancies (1st pill, 2nd sponge, 3rd condom) and the most common contriceptive is the pill.

Honestly I think it is because it isn't being taken correctly. For me I was taking the pill, and even on the little instruction manual it says that you can double up if you miss a day... well, I missed a day and doubling up increases the chances of becomming pregnant and that there is why I did end up pregnant. You are supposed to take it once a day, everyday, at the same time. I'm sure those who've become pregnant while on the pill, like me, did something a little off...

That chance is if the pill is used as directed exactly. Unfortunatley most women get complacent with their pills and take them at different times and miss them and forget about what other drug interactions there are while on it. There are a lot of factors and most of us disregard them while on the pill and end up with a whoops!
I took the pill for 8 years and didn't get pregnant, went off the pill and got pregnant within two weeks!

It's 99% if you take it correctly. Many women don't remember to take it at the exact same time daily, which lowers the affectiveness, and many women forget to take it one day, or a couple. That window can easily provide for pregnancy.
I have taken the pill. I didn't get pregnant on it. I took it correctly.
My sister-in-law did get pregnant with her first while on the pill, but she admits to missing a day accidentally.
