The motor is behind the pillar, and the "drill" is in front of the pillar.

The motor drives the drill using "vee" belts inside the top metal cover.

The motor shaft has pulleys (ranging from big to small), and the drill shaft has similar.

The belt has to go from motor pulley to drill pulley in a horizontal way (so belt runs straight onto both pulleys).

Fastest speed is when the belt runs on the largest motor pulley to the smallest drill pulley.

Slowest speed is when the belt runs on the smallest motor pulley to the largest drill pulley.

Other speeds are available by using the inbetween pulleys.

The motor normally has some sort of "belt tensioning" arrangement (with locking screw), which has to be loosened so that the belt can be moved, and then re-tightened after moving the belt.

HI-DINKY, First of all pillor drills are made to go at lower speeds so to give the drill a better chance to drill through the material, & you will find you will have a problem fitting it for a morticing cutter, with a morticing machine the outer cutter is held firm whyl the drill bit inside turns, i have had both of these machines & they are different,DF;

Some pillar drills require you to remove top cover and adjust belt to one of the 3cogs inside. The largest cog is the powerfullest one.
