I have tried to solve this equations here is what I did could you please let me know if I have done this correct or where I am going wrong, thanks for any help you can give
2x=3 - 8(x+2) solving gives
2x=3 - 8x - 16 multiplying out brackets,
10x=3 - 16
10x= - 13
x= - 1.3

2x = 3 -8x - 16
add 10x to both sides - and then deduct the other 2x (lol)
10x = 3 -16
do the addition
10 x = -13
divide by 10
x = -1.3

2x^3 + 17x^2 = - 8x 2x^3 + 17x^2 + 8x = 0 x(2x^2 + 17x + 8) = 0 x(2x + 1)(x + 8) = 0 x = 0 or x = - 1/2 or x = - 8

multiply out brackets

2x = 3 - 8x - 16

then gather like terms together

2x + 8x = 3 - 16

10x = -13

therefore

x = -1.3

you got it right - if it doesnt match the answer at the back of the book then perhaps recheck that you have written the questiond own correctly

now I am baffled - surely you would do the element of '...=3-8...' first, giving you the sum

2x=-5(x+2)

not sure if that would give the same answer in the long run, and bearing in mind I haven't done this sort of thing for over 25 years my brain cells are a little (well ok, a lot) foggy. So please forgive me if I am totally off the mark

It looks ok.

When you're doing equations remember the Mnemonic BODMAS.

Brackets, Of (i.e. times), Divide, Multiply, Add, Subtract.

If you do the actions in this order then you will always work them out right.

Yes, it is correct. I substituted the x on the equation and it works, it gives me -2.6 at both side of the equal sign.

Answer is spot on.

remember that the procedure is BOMDAS then as a final check substitute the answer into the left hand side and equally substitute the answer into the right hand side. Both answers should agree.
