Why, why not and what uses will it serve?

It would help but you do not need it to get by or anything. I do not know spanish and I'm latino and many people assume I speak it. I get by fine w/o it and most spanish speakers know or at least understand some english well enough to communicate. And it all depends on what part of SD you live in; if you live south of interstate 8 it's going to be more helpful than if you live in North County. Don't worry about it, you'll be fine with just english and will probably learn some spanish anyways from being here.

You don't have to but it would be a good idea, both to be able to communicate as well as to open up more job opportunities.

It is not true what above poster said about it being necessary to know Spanish for a public contact job. However, it does increase your employability and in some jobs there's a financial incentive for being bilingual.

Unfortunately I have very limited skills in language acquision and so have had a difficult time at it. The brain learns language much better prior to age 8 (proven by research) yet we teach foreign languages in school at grade 9 and above...stooopid!

So if you have the opportunity and interest to learn Spanish, go for it! I made the mistake of taking French because I thought it sounded cool. What an idiot I was.

I currently teach ESL (English for foreigners) and you would not believe the interesting stories they have to tell. If you don't speak Spanish and live in Southern California, you are missing out on some interesting stuff.

It is always helpful to learn another language and since SD has a large hispanic population it might come in helpful. I worked at an MD office and it would have come in handy but lived there for 41 years without knowing how to speak it and I got along allright.

It's not required, but it's a good idea to know as much as you can. It means you will be able to communicate with everyone. This is particularly important if you are in a service job where some of the 'customers' only speak spanish.

Nope. I work at Aeropostale in Horton Plaza (the big multi-level mall in downtown San Diego) and we get a lot of illegals coming into the store. Even though they don't speak English, money is a universal language. Remember, we're in America.

No, remember San Diego is in the USA not Mexico.

Ok...I don't speak a lick of Spanish (ok..I can order a beer) but I have no problem at all. I work in retail and sometimes we do have people come in that don't speak English, but it's not hard to find someone who can help them.

It doesn't matter if you know spanish but it would be more useful if you did education wise and if you just want to see what they might be saying
