Using the metric system can be a bit tricky especially when you are used to other systems such as feet/yards. The basics of the metric system are pretty easy to understand once you know what the abbreviations stand for. For example, when you see the letter "m," it means "meter." When you see the letters "mm" it means "milimeter." When you see the letters "km" the means kilometer. A meter is a little bit more than 3 feet or 1 yard. A milimeter is exactly one thousandth of a meter. That is, if you were to cut a meter stick into a thousand pieces, the length of one of those pieces is a milimeter. Finally, the kilometer is the same as 1,000 meters. That is, if you were to line up a thousand meter sticks end-to-end, the length of the whole line is a kilometer. A kilometer is roughly 5/8ths of a mile. A mile is 5,280 feet. To answer your question, 8 km means 8 kilometers which is 8,000 meters. Let me put it in a simple chart for you to understand:
1m=1 meter= a little over 3 feet or 1 yard
1mm= 1 milimeter= 1 thousandth of a meter= 1/1000 meters
1km=1 kilometer= 1 thousand meters=1000meters=5/8 miles

I do hope you're kidding.
1 km = 1000 meters so 8 km = 8000 meters.

I assume you mean a triangle has area 54 km^2 and h = 8 km , what is the base (b) ? A = 1/2 bh 54 = 1/2 * b*8 54 = 4b b = 54/4 = 13.5 km
