I posted a question on here the other day . The question was,( why did they ever give woman the right to vote ?)
Yahoo in their wisdom decided that this qoestion was in violatiion of their terms. I fully understand that this question may have offended some women, but surely in a free society were we are suposed to have free speech, i should have had the right to ask the question.Has it got to the stage were you cant question the quality of a loaf of bread without being brought to book for offending the baker. If any woman found the question offencive then they had the rite to post a comment, and express their dissaproval. The question did not contain any expletives. So all im saying is that in a free country. Yuo should be able to ask a question especially one that isnt braking any laws. What do you think?

Just because some people do not like what another person has said. they should never have the rite to stop him from saying it. No matter whether its a goverment or any private company.

I totally agree with your argument in favour of free speech However I agree with Yahoo here because the phraseology of your question was, in even my enlightened attitude, offensive. Please look at your question..."Why did they ever give women the right to vote". The immediate response from the reader is that you believe women to be inferior. I do not know if this is indeed your view but that is how it is perceived. That, I am afraid, is unacceptable. I have no time for all this PC nonsense, and firmly believe in free speech, but within that there must be boundaries and I feel you overstepped these. Sorry but that is how I see it. Maybe if you had phrased it in a less negative way it would have been accepted. After all it is not what you ask but the way you ask it.

The Constituion only guarantees the right to be free of government interference with free speech. Yahoo is a private company and can restrict what they allow. You have the right to say that I am fat, stupid, or ugly, but if you are going to do so at dinner, then I may decide not to let you have dinner at my place. I have the right to write a newspaper editorial that says two-year-olds should vote, but the newspaper does not have to publish it. This does not prevent you from speaking; it just means that you have to either find a website that will let you or start your own website.

It is just possible that you are interested in the history of the right to vote. In that case it would have been valid to ask something like 'How did women come to have the right to vote?' Most women would have found this acceptable and would have been happy to tell you how the right evolved to include working people, some women, then all women and finally ended with 'One person one vote' which came about in 1948.

Yahoo! is not the government. They are a private company allowing us to post here. They can and do set the rules for what can be posted here, and they can and do enforce those rules. It is not an infringement on free speech, it is simply part of the terms you agreed to when you signed up for Y!A.
BTW, did you know that there's a spell check button? (Not that it would have helped with "braking any laws")

This website has it's own Community Guidelines that you agreed to when you started posting. It was "reported" by a member who thought your question was not proper in this Forum and Yahoo agreed. You could make your statement on a sidewalk, but not in the "privately owned" Forums here.

With free speech comes responsibility. Part of the responsibility entails being sensitive to discrimination. Obviously the offended parties used their freedom to report your ill-concieved question. Have you told your mother yet that she shouldn't be allowed to vote?

Look on the bright side! Sometimes the guidelines prevent people from making an absolute t*t of themselves!
