Drugs & Knowledge

"`But what did the Dormouse say?' one of the jury asked."
"`That I can't remember,' said the Hatter.

'Grace has always said that White Rabbit was intended as a slap toward parents who read their children stories such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (in which Alice uses several drug-like substances in order to change herself) and then wondered why their children grew up to do drugs. For Grace and others in the '60s, drugs were an inevitable part of mind-expanding and social experimentation. With its enigmatic lyrics, "White Rabbit" became one of the first songs to sneak drug references past censors on the radio. Even Marty Balin, Grace's eventual rival in the Airplane, regarded the song as a "masterpiece."'

It means feed your head with knowledge. Lewis Carroll, the author of "Alice in Wonderland", was later found to be an avid user of mushrooms, aka, mushrooms that you can get high on. Many people think that he had a vivid imagination because of his drugs.

In the song, Jefferson Airplane says that "one pill makes you larger one pill makes you small, and the ones mother give you don't do anything at all ( medicinal pills, which aren't supposed to make you high)", and "go ask Alice when she is 10 feet tall", which is a side effect of taking drugs (feeling tall, etc). The song talks about the side effects of LSD in a "Alice in Wonderland" theme.

Good song huh?

It's a combination drug/knowledge line. In the 60's, the view on drugs was about expanding your mind. The song was definitely about a drug trip but also about having a different view on something (in this case, a children's tale).

Check out Sanctuary's cover of the song, it's great.

It is in refence to Alice in wonderland. The song is based of the orginal book, Alice through the Looking Glass. Watch Disney's version & alot that is in that song will be clear but the book is better. I have no idea why they wrote a song based off a child's book. :)
