I'm pretty sure my starter is dead but before I go buy another I thought I'd ask here. Everytime I turn the key, my car makes this pathetic sound, like it is trying to start but super weak. It's like the starter goes for a second and then stops. It won't keep going enough to get the engine running. Every once in a while the engine will catch and the car will start. Afterwards the car will run great. I got my battery and my Alternator tested so I know they are good. Do I just need a new starter? Is there anything else it could be?

It is most likely the starter but don't look past the possibility of a bad wire to the starter. Check them for cracking, corrosion or a loose connection. The first starter I ever replaced was actually unnecessary as I later found out the starter wire at the starter relay was loose.

STOP!!!! NEVER replace any part till you know the problem. Were the alternator and battery tested on the car ?? You need to get a voltmeter and while the car is idling check from positive to negative battery terminals. There must be at least 14 volts. If not enough voltage you may have a loose wire or a blown alternator fuse. Turn engine off and check the same way. You must have at least 13.5 volts or the battery is not charged. Clean battery terminals. Take the terminals off and use a battery brush to clean the trminals and posts till they are shiny clean. I don't know what your car is or how old the battery is or how it was tested to be ok. Don't mess with that starter till you are sure.

If your starter is acting up, tap it with a hammer, wrench or something. That usually works to get your car started.
