1. They earned it
Examples of how they earned it?
Through sacrifice on many levels.
The loss of life was astounding.

People put their entire lives on hold for years and not just young men either but people with families, wives and kids put themselves in harms way so that other people could live free of tyranny.
Involvement was on a massive scale outside of just those involved in the fighting. Women working in factories, people rationing gas, sugar, meat everything for the war effort, people planting "Victory Gardens", serving in home guard units, lots of examples these are just a few.
There's been lots of wars in the past but you've got to admit that what people of that generation sacrificed and endured, not for themselves in many cases but for the benefit of others was pretty remarkable.

G'day Chrissy3,
Thank you for your question.
Three reasons for:
1. Their performance in World War 2;
2. Surviving the Depression
3. Their performance in the Cold War
Three reasons again
1. It is a marketing ploy for Tom Brokaw's book.
2. Every generation has things it can be proud of and things it can't.
3. Military success is not the only arbiter of greatness.
I have attached sources for your reference.
Regards

1) The civilian population who supported and sacrificed to win the war and protect democracy.
2) Those who served in the military to win the war and protect democracy.
3) That generation took their nations (the USA in particular) from staggering economic depression, through the war, and onwards to incredible levels of economic growth and rebuilding.
