That would be flood basalt eruptions. The Siberian Traps were the largest eruptions ever to occur on earth.

El Jefe is absolutely correct. That eruption probably caused the great extinction that marked the end of the Permian. It made the K-T event which killed the dinosaurs look like small potatoes.

There was a smaller example of this type of event during the late Cretaceous in India, called the Deccan Traps. It might have been a partner in their extinction. There was an event in the North Western United States as well which laid down an unholy amount of magma. I've forgotten the dates of that one.
