It really depends on what you are looking for!
Texas is a very large state, larger than most other countries. Due to it's size, there are vast changes in the terrain and the lifestyle as you travel around the state.
In East Texas you have the piney woods area with swampy areas, lakes rivers and lots of trees, very much like louisiana to the east. Sportsmen often favor this area as the fishing and some hunting are great in this area.
In the coastal bend you have the oil areas of Houston, the port city of Galveston and the Texas Riviera along Padre Island. Each has it's own appeal, and is special in it's own way, and if you like to spend time at the coast or boating is the place to be.
In West Texas you have the arid plains, dusty, often hot, not quite dry enough to be classified a desert this area has vast open areas with large ranches, small communities, some oil fields. It also includes the Big Bend area which is a nice place to visit. In El Paso you have a nice grouping of mountains and a beautioful dust storm in the afternoons.
The Panhandle area is really just western Oklahoma
The north Texas Plains includes many small towns and the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. Many of the small communities around the metroplex are considered by US News and World Reports as prime places to retire due to good housing cost, controlled crime, and ample entertainment opportunities.
However, In my personal opinion, the best area to live in is the Hill Country area and the San Antonio-Austin Entertainment Cooridor. Rolling hiils, with rivers and lakes dot a tree covered landscape in central Texas. Two of the largest cities in Texas and the 7th Largest city in the US are in theis area. San Antonio is host to Six Flags FIesta Texas, Sea World, in 5 years contruction will start on a Disney theme park in this area, San Antonio is already the US second fastest growing major city, overall crime is close to the national average and considered reasonable for a major city, There are 3 military bases in the city, and a lot of tourism, as there are ample entertainment opportunities. San Antonio has a strong feeling for it's meixcan heritage and this is evident in the many festivals in the city.
Conversely Austin, the state capitol, is one of the countries ten greenest cities. Also considered to be on of the healthiest cities in the country. Always kept young by hte strong influence of the University of Texas and her 56,000 students this city has Texas' strongest music and entertainment venues.
Many small communities are between San Antonio and Austin, though these small communities are growing and while 20 years ago it seemed like a long drive between SA and Austin, now you never seem to leave one before you are in the other. In the area you have the largest outlet mall area in the country in San Marcos, and in New Braunfels, you find Schlitterbahn, the number one waterpark in the country. The rivers between SA and Austin play host to tubers, which is a great summer pastime and one of my favorite activities. Also in the Area between SA nad Austin you have the Hill country Wine Trail, whihc is a grouping of several wineries and vinyards producing fine wines which produce not quantity wines but qualities that compete with others world wide.
So my humble suggestion would be the best place in Texas is the Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin, probably New Braunfels or Canyon Lake area

Some might say Austin, but I think Austin is 2nd.
I think Dallas metroplex is best place in Texas. Big city, low unemployment, steady growth, and just a couple hours drive to get out in the country if you're sick of the city.
Besides, the Dallas Cowboys play here! What else could you want?

San Marcos (or thereabouts). Easy access to both Austin and San Antonio. Affordable housing, University (Tx State), in the sought after hill country, and if you like shopping theres a great big outlet mall :-) also crime is fairly low...

i have lived in texas for the past 6 months, and its my least favorite place i have ever lived. i plan on moving the second my lease is up. but i live in the dallas/fort worth area. it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so hot and didn't have so many tornadoes during the spring. plus the land is flat, and there is no scenery.
