Nothing short of a severe alien attack, with further threats of future imminent attacks, will cause this world to unite. Anything less will fail to have a lasting impact.
Ridding the world of religion would help a little, but really, religion is just the excuse agitated people use to exhibit the more depraved facets of the human creatures, which would find a way into action without any deities.
Yep, it would have to be an alien attack.
edit: Ha, the guy right before me said pretty much the same thing. Two people in row with the same theory: we must be on to something!

The only thing I can think of is if the world was attacked by hostile aliens that wanted to completely eliminate mankind. Usually when people are forced together by a common foe, that's when they realize that their petty differences don't mean anything when survival is on the line. Also humans are typically filled with hatred, one thing that can make them stop hating each other is if they all hate something else more. It sounds ridiculous, I know, but you can't really stop people from hating each other. As long as people have free will, then they'll always hate someone else. Humans have always hated and committed acts of violence on one another, and it's always been like this, and unfortunately it probably always will be.

None at the moment.
Why? A lot of any change will only happen with complete disclosure of accurate information.
Information - is a commodity that is difficult at best to dessiminate. As for accuracy, it is questionable.
Timely disclosure? LOL
Scientific explanation? RTFLMAO

Second scenario that will accomplish what you are asking is this.
A very slow moving meteor, visible for a few weeks in the sky, that will be seen throughout the world. It is headed towards our direction.
At least 10 yrs before that is even visible, our sky watch systems would have already seen it coming. Lets say 5 years only for discussions sake.
Countries will put collective scientific heads together to plot its course, plan defenses , etc. How will the rest of the world be told? Will it even be prudent to tell us about it? What will be the effect. Total panic?
Will that "stop us from warring and hating each other?"
It is easier to see blame throwing, countries accusing each other of " God punishment for your evil ways" God is angry and now we will also be destroyed with you, etc"

Unfortunately, the end of the world, most likely. Or the end of human species, which will eventually happen when the sun explodes - within a few million years. It's not a pessimistic view, though,it's true. For as long as we're humans, people will feel love, pain, hate and compassion, you can't be naive to the extent that you don't understand that. We possess things and we have a nature that draws us to conflict,it's a necessary form of confrontation and communication. Sometimes, those conflicts reach a certain dimension which we can consider exagerated - wars and so on,but you must consider that people will always do wrong...at least, for as long as there's someone who's doing right.

Time and again, we've seen that what unites warring groups is a common threat. In other words, if a disaster threatens you and me both, there's a good chance we will work together to ensure we both survive.
Global warming, which will affect our food supply, is one universal problem which is already bringing many nations together. (However, the crisis is one of the future, so wars are still occurring.)
The possibility of being annihilated by an asteroid, although more remote, is another danger we all face.

before answering that just a couple of points.
1) WWIII would, by definition not unite but divide people - otherwise there wouldn't be a war.
2) the existance of aliens does not prove nor disprove the existance of God. The two are totally separate questions, although admittedly it would throw a big conundrum into the supposition that we are made in god's image! :)
The one thing that could unity all mankind? If god came down and said, 'I am God, there is only me, no other god. There is a hell and there is a heaven and I ain't that forgiving. Everything is equal in my eyes: humans, trees, animals, bacteria. Now behave or I send Satan up to have a little word!'

If you think about most of the wars now it is either over land or religion, one country thinks it should own certain bits of land in their own country and fight for it, Israel v Palestine, Protestants V Catholics, this is just a couple of religious wars, too much race hatred in the world, people are not tolerant any more and it is a sad state of affairs.

the truth. most war and hatred is spread due to religion. If everyone knew the truth, the real religion and the real god and there was nothing to prove it wrong, I think that would bring the world's ppl together. We all have different beliefs that will never unite... therefore pain, war, hatred... will all continue. I am a Christian, I've submitted to God and He will lead me to calvary. I will have peace, in my heart and I will spread that peace. It's all I can do in a big world.
