the area formula is ,
area= length times width
since you have the are and the width,
you plug them into the equation and put in a variable for the length ( i am using L)
42 sq. in = 3 in (L)
you then want to isolate the variable so since 3 is being multiplied by L you divide by 3 to get rid of it. so the it is 42 divided by 3 on the other side. you then get 14 in, so L= 14, the length equals 14 inches.
hope that helps :)

Area of a rectangle is width times length. In a formula, it looks like this:
A = L * W
You know that A is 42
You know that W is 3
So your equation is:
42 = L * 3
Then you just solve for L by dividing both sides by 3
42/3 = L
14 = L

Area Formula for a rectangle
A = L x W
42 = L3
Divide both sides of the equation by 3
42 / 3 = L3 / 3
42/3 = L
14 = L

Area = L*W
So substitute
42 = L*3 ; divide both side by 3
14 = L
Check you answer
42 = (14)*3 ??
42 = 42 YES!
Make sense? Hope this helps.
