All season long we adjust our expectations until we get to a post season that we didn't expect. Even then, we come away broken hearted.

Cats are like that. They ignore us, hide when we want some love or attention, and then when they get slightly hungry they're the lovingest pets ever. AND WE LET THEM GET BY WITH IT!!!

Baseball is like that. Every year, a heartbreak. Every time you like a player, he's a bust.

And still we come back. Every season. Why is that??

Phil S -- nope. Not only that, but almost the opposite. And yet. . .

b4_999 -- sure. But why is it baseball actually breaks the heart, while other sports only cause a little grief? And then, just when we're on the verge of saying, "To heck with this!!!" we come back for more.

My dad introduced me to his heartbreak at an early age. I've been a Cubs fan since I was about 8. That's about 30 years of dejectedness, and crushing blows when hopes get raised. And yet I still cling to the thought that surely, eventually, they have to meet my expectations!
The Cubs and I did have a major falling out when they traded Greg Maddux to the Braves, of all teams. I gave em the cold shoulder for a few seasons. But I forgave and forgot, and I find myself pulled back into the madness, primed for more disappointment.
I also have two cats.
Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment.

Baseball is a constant presence for over 6 months. They play nearly everyday so you get sucked into checking the standings every day. The season is long enough and with enough games that when you fall behind early, there is still time to catch up so you stay hopeful. But it's a two edged sword in that there are so many games that when you get ahead, there is still ample opportunity to collapse so you have to stay worried.

And then in the playoffs, its anyone's game. I've read statistical analyses that say in baseball the better ball team wins about 55% of the time. That's not a big edge. Over 162 games, you can be reasonably assured the best team will come in first. But in a 5 or 7 game series it is nearly a random chance that either team will win. So you can root for the 2001 Seattle Mariners and win 116 games and then get kocked out by a Yankees team that can barely score a run. Or you can be the 2003 Yankees and outscore and out pitch the young inexperienced Marlins and still lose in 6 games.

In Basketball, you pretty much know who the best couple of teams are and there isn't much you can do about it.

In Football, if your team starts 1-3 you can pretty much kiss the post-season goodbye. In baseball you can start 1-3 and become the '98 Yankees finishing 125-50 and sweeping the world series.

You never know what will happen.

The reason we all come back is exactly because of all the things you bring up. Baseball is so unpredictable that it seems most fans can never get it right. But that one time everything falls into place and your team wins, or the player you thought would have a big year actually does, it makes it all worth while and you can't wait for the next season to start, and here comes the heartbreak once again. Several years of the ups and downs and the game has actually captured your heart and soul forever and you are now a true fan of the game for life. What a great game it is.

That's baseball for you! Your never going to be fully happy. I mean, last year there was plenty of disappointments with the Cardinals losses, but then it was great in the end when they won the World Series! So this year of course I'm disappointed that they didn't get into the playoffs but hey, baseball is fun to get into, get excited about, get disappointed etc. That's what it is! And for the players, they aren't all busts. Only some. Overall, it's a great sport!

It comes with being a fan. Just any long time Cubs or Red Sox fan.

Only one team wins its last game. Same with every sport.

We Mariner fans have had our hearts broken so many times we don't feel the pain so much anymore. At least you have your cat to talk to.
