There is a tremendous amount of mistrust between the players and owners in the NHL. Most of it is a hangover from the days when John Ziegler and Alan Eagleson sort of split up the pie between players and owners. They had legal peace, but Eagleson pocketed a share of the proceeds for his personal gain. Even though that was quite a while ago, those walls have not been broken down. So Bettman is regarded as someone who is a management mouthpiece.

Words like little, creep, fairy, garden gnome and pip-squeak pop up frequently when players discus Bettman.
