The neighborhood boys did and my male cousins also. I remember going everyday to check on the progress. I thought I would let them do the work then follow them down the hole.

I do remember trying to dig to China. Something else always came up though, such as supper time, dark time, or just got bored with it. Never found out for sure.

I don't remember having any illusions about reaching China, but my brother and I enjoyed digging a deep hole in the vacant lot next door every summer. Funny thing, digging was hard work, but we were both generally lazy and were adverse to any other work.

My mother swears that until I started school, my most constant state while outside was "naked" because I used to take off my clothes and shoes and bury them. Unfortunately for her, our back yard at the time was just sand, so she wasn't able to find most of them.
I DO remember trying to dig my way to china with my baby brother. I think we were about 4 and 2 respectively.
I know that about that same time my older brothers were conning my older sister (7 at the time) to eat worms, saying they were "just like spaghetti". She happily ate anything they handed her. Me? I was too smart for them even then. I can remember my 9 year old brother trying the same line on me, but I just shook my head no, and when my baby brother was going to eat it, I knocked it out of his hand and told him it was "bad".

You know I did, at least I believed if we dug a deep enough hole we could do it. I had to wait until 2004 though to actually get there, the right way, on a plane :-)
We also tried to find the end of the rainbow.

I was always afraid that in the middle of the earth was where the Devil lived (I'd say it, but I'd probably get reported). I pictured having to go through fire and brimstone before getting to the other side where China was. So I never tried.

lmao, yes, my brother and sisters and i did try to dig our way to china when we were young. we never found china, but we did feel the willow switch across our behinds. then we had to feel in the very deep, wide hole we made. that was the last time we ever tried. the results were to painful to try again.

Can't say I did that......but I did ponder on how high would you have to go in a hot air balloon to wait for the world to rotate under you to where you could just wait and then lower the balloon and get off. LOL

I didn't do it , but my brother was always playing "war". He dug this huge hole at the bottom of the back door stairs. My mom freaked out and said "what the h*** are you doing ?" He looked up at her and said "it's a foxhole". He filled it in fast when he saw her face.
