My mom is watching him while I am at work and she just called and said that she went around the corner of the bar in the kitchen and came right back and my 8 1/2 month old son was standing holding onto this basket and waving his little arm and he said "bye bye! bye bye!". I wave bye to him every morning and say it and he has been waving bye to me for about 2 months now. So I know he said it and knows what it means. He repeats ba ba sometimes and he knows what it is but since it is one of those things babies repeat over and over I didn't know if that would have been considered his first or if bye bye was his first. I just want to know what to write in his baby book =)

AND just out of curiosity, what were your babies first words?

Aww how I would have loved for mama to be his first words! He only cries MAAA MAAAAAAA in his sleep and I NEVER hear it otherwise. But if you say mama he looks at me so maybe soon =)

just an FYI - he has done everything quick. I DON'T say this because he is my child and every mom brags on their child. I say this because I have a 11 month old great-niece and my mom also watches a 9 1/2 month old baby too and he does almost everything the 11 month old does and WAY more than the 9 1/2 month old.

It is entirely possible this is his first meaningful utterance (the criterion for "first word"). He is actually above the 90th percentile for expressive language since he's only 8 1/2 months old and has been waving bye-bye to you for a couple of months.
My son's first word was bye-bye, too. He said it as guests were leaving his first birthday party. He had been saying "uh-oh" appropiately when he dropped things at 8 1/2 months, but it couldn't qualify as a first word.

I would say BYE was his first word,,,and write a brief reason why ,just like you told us...than maybe write down another word you notice him saying...pretty soon his book will be full.......Just making a point ...HOW FAST THEY GROW UP..enjoy every minute and keep up the book,,I only did it for first 2 kids than i gave up and the girls are upset I didn't do it for their book..

I would say that those were his first words if he hasn't looked at you and said "mama" yet. My daughters first was "Mama" and she does it now whenever she gets upset. She'll start crying and say, "Mamaaaaaaaa" to get me to pick her up and hold her. She'll say it when she's happy too, but mostly when she's upset for whatever reason.
