The Republicans are mainly a party that looks out for huge corporations, and the greediest of the uber-wealthy.
That's a small section of the American electorate. If they ran on their actual agenda, even conservatives would vote against them.
So how do you get a majority of people to vote against their self-interest? You bamboozle them as much as possible, and try to keep them from thinking clearly by appealing to ignorance, hatred and fear.

I think the answer lies in "Truth Seekers" reply. The Republican Party plays on the fears of its party members, then blinds each of them to the fact that there are so many of them with conflicting views. Groups that are truly concerned about preserving life are sitting right next to groups that promote the loss of life and they don't see them. The Republican machine is truly a thing of beauty!!!

No, the Republican Party relies on greed, hate, and fear.
Conservatives want clean air, clean water, safe cars, safe roads, police, firefighters, etc. etc. but they don't want to be taxed. So the Republican Party plays on their greed and promises no new taxes.
Conservatives are often afraid of anything different, and that fear manifests itself as anger. So the Republican Party plays on that anger by promising no gay marriage, no flag burning, no illegal immigrants, no gun control, etc. etc.
And finally, conservatives fear "the American way" being attacked. The Republican Party plays on this fear by constantly reminding us all of the few times our country has been attacked, and warning that if we don't elect them, we'll be attacked again (even though 9/11 happened under their watch, if you can call it a "watch").

lets see,
Kennedy tried to end the viet nam war and was assasinated for it.
Nixon, cost thousands of lives and expanded the war initially, later he was impeached due to watergate corruption.
Reagan started amassing the largest federal debt n US history.
Clinton set in motion steps to eliminate the debt.
Bush 2 put us 9 trillion in debt and preemptively struck Iraq, thus creating instability in america and fuel for increasing terrorist training cells - goood job.
to answer writers question- yes the party of big business,
big oil and weapons manufacturers had been looking for a fear patsy ever since the soviet union fell (dammit!). Luckily americans are true paranoids, oops, I mean patriots, at heart and can fall for, sh_t, I mean see the threat of a third world country, bounded by our no fly zones, with no high tech weaponry or long distance delivery capabilty- 'danger ,danger Will Robinson", reality really can be absurd....

If you look back at the early agenda of the Bush administration, you will see that war was not on the radar screen at all. From the beginning of February to the beginning of September of 01, his agenda was very domestic.
9/11 changed all of that. Your conjecture is not accurate or fair.

They're not much WITH it.
"Awesome prosperity"? Not in this country! Tax cuts have kept job creation WELL behind the rate of population growth.

If you are correct, then that means the Democrats are nothing without racism, trumped-up social injustice, welfare, inequality, an underclass of "helpless" minorities, political correctness and thought-control censoring free speech, embracing the enemies point of view, allowing illegal aliens to have more rights and privileges than Citizens, taking away our Constitutional rights to defend ourselves, and domineering supervision of thought and action over grown adults.
. . . in order to position themselves as our protectors and saviors?

Lets see,
Ike, ended the war in Korea
JFK, failed Bay of Pigs invasion
LBJ, war in Viet Nam
Nixon, ended war in Viet Nam
Ford, no war
Jimmy, Shah of Iran fell, terrorist in Iran took our hostages
Reagan, won the cold war, liberated Granada
GW 1, liberated Kuwait
Clinton, ignored terrorism
GW 2, responded to 9/11
There is always conflict, chaos, and danger. Democrats make the mess, republicans clean it up.
