Out of the email headers of an email with defamatory and abusive content, I have established the ISP using which these emails were sent. I believe with the timestamp and the IP address the ISP should be able to establish the real identity of the person who owns that account.

My question is: Will the ISP share this information with me if I approached them directly, or do I need a lawyer to be able to do so?

Are there any details the ISP may be willing to share with me without getting the services of a lawyer?

The most definitive way would be get a lawyer. However, the another solution would be stop the writer of "defamatory and abusive content" by contacting the ISP and forward the email to them. Do not just forward without contacting them as that might not get any result. This will help to block that user from using their services and might even have a financial impact to user as every new user 'signs' disclaimer stating they won't post offensive material.

Yeah, no way will you find that out without getting a lawyer and probably police or court approval. That would be like me calling your ISP and telling them that you were sending abusive content to me. In my case Im lying, in your case you are not, but the ISP has no way of knowing that.

Put simply no, data protection. You can request if it is abuse, but you will need to log a crime report!! Block the IP at your router, or mail server.
