That is a very good question. I think back over all these long
years, and I feel very blessed, that I still have two original
friends from childhood still with me. I can't even begin to
think of all those in the past, who lived near me and called me
friend, and drifted away when they chose to befriend some-
one else who they began to like and socialize with more.
I have friends I can count on, to assist me if I really need
some help, and I have. And they have proven their friendship.
I have three reliable friends. And one long distant friend out
of state. And one friend who started out as my shadow in
gradeschool, has been drifting away for several years now.
I am lucky to hear from her a few times a year.
I have always tried to hold onto my friends, as they are im-
portant to me. But things happen in other peoples' lives to
where staying in touch isn't as important as I think should be. In order to be friends you have to be present in their lives. Not
merely a phone call, a couple times a year, to check and see
if you're still living.
I have one close friend, who's been my friend, since we
were both 4 or 5 living on the same street. And she lives
halfway across the state, and she emails me several times
a week. And she will stop by and see me when she comes
to the big city. So that's once a month anyway. She's been
there for me, more times than I can count. She's remembered
me with gifts at Christmas, that have really helped out financially, and she is on a fixed income herself. She has
taken me around the big city, running errands in an emergency. And she volunteered. I didn't have to ask. And
she didn't want reimbursement on her gas either. She is
perhaps my one and only true friend, I can ALWAYS count
on. And she lives very far away. I wish I could do as much for
her, as she's done for me. She's always there for support,
and she always makes me laugh and smile when we're
together. She's more like a sister, than a friend. And I'll settle
for either.

I could count the real friends on one hand. Those I know and we have spent some real hard times together, yes, one hand.

However, there are a tremendous number of acquaintences and I would need an abacus for that. But we must remember that acquaintences, for the most part, haven't shared the bad times that it takes to make a really good friend. I remember in the Bible, one verse, and it says it all:

"A friend loveth at all times, but a brother is born of adversity".

It's true.

Blessings!

I don't use the term 'friend' loosely and am blessed to be able count on both hands my true friends. Would need feet also for acquaintances.

My true friends I count on one hand, though I know a lot of people and I am friendly with them, they are only acquaintances in my mind. I've been kicked in the teeth by so called friends before, so now I am very very carefull of who I let become a friend.

I can count my actual friends on one hand. Four very dear ones have passed on in the last few yrs, so one hand is all I need.

I'm blessed, I can count both hands and feet. The only sadness is that they don't live where I am living.

But we are all constantly in touch via email and telephone.

True friends closer than family are a mere two, the friends here much more and acquaintances don't count.
