I just asked for some feedback on helping a person close to me in regards to how to approach her on the subject. With the replies that I have been given, I wonder now, why it is entirely up to the person to help themselves...the help is needed in other areas. What areas would you consider to be helpful?

all they have to is provide public knowledge and build public support to educate people on how to be healthy and Advertisers and Corporate America could change the trends in 10 years.... but there's more money in making people fat (or so they think)

I think it would be good to not have commercials on TV for food. I know a lot of people would scoff at that, but when you're trying to avoid junk food, it's amazing how that late-night pizza commercial can send you into a craving tizzy!

We've taken other things off TV that some people abuse, like alcohol. We've taken things off that have far-reaching public health effects, like cigarettes. If obesity is a national epidemic, then it would be good to get the thing causing obesity (or at least helping a lot) out of our faces all the time. :)

I see allot of fast food places are already offering alternative foods to the big greasy hamburger. I see allot of grilled chicken sandwiches or salads, fruits and yogurts, milk and orange juice being served. They've done what they can, it's not up to advertisers nor corporations, it's up to each individual. Just like all the beer and cigarette companies put warning labels on all their products. It's up to the person if they want to drink a beer or 12 beers, not the beer company.

I do think that when it comes to obese children, the schools could get more involved. They should have mandatory physical education classes. When I was in school, PE was mandatory thru 8th grade and after that it was just a blow off class that you would take in high school........and would probably ditch anyway.

I wish you the best of luck with your friend. But it is going to be up to him/her whether they want to live much longer. I come from a Mexican family, so everyting is deep-fried!! But as soon as we found out my parents had diabetes, we have taken the grease level down. They have gone to diet drinks, low fat milk, major cut back on the bread and tortillas. But see it was totally up to them to take better care of themselves. My parents love their kids and grandkids and they want to be a part of their lives for as long as they can. I have my first on the way, so this is even mooooore to look forward to.

So just ask your friend what he/she has to live for?

Good luck again and God bless!

I"ve heard that medicare is going to start covering the gastric bypass surgery for morbidly obese individuals as part of a preventive program.

That will certainly help quite a few people.

Most people are over weight because they use food to calm themselves.
That's why people gain weight when they stop smoking.Smoking calms them.
We need to calm down, but we need to find a healthy way to calm down.
Like knitting.
