What type of breast pump you get depends on how often you are going to pump. If your planning on breastfeeding full time then a manual pump would work for you. I have an Avent Isis manual pump and i love it. Mine cost around $50.
If your planning on bottle feeding breast milk or returning to work a double or single electric pump will work. They are more expensive but are more practical. A good quality double electric pump is around $150 to $200. You can rent a hospital grade pump from hospitals or medical supply stores as well.
I only pump occasionally for a relief bottle or to have a stockpile in the freezer so my Avent pump is ideal for me.

I loved my medela pump in style. I nursed my son until he self-weaned at 10 months and during this time I worked a part-time job in the evenings.
It is a double pump, has a convenient carrying case, can be battery operated (I've used it in the car before) or plugged in. The carrying case has a place for a cooler, which is included with ice packs. I got mine from Target for under $300. It is a little pricey, but if you are going to be pumping on a regular basis it is worth it.
If you are not going to pump as often but would like a good pump for times you'll be away from your baby or to help relieve engorgement, like if your a Stay at home mom but want a pump for a night out etc. Avent has a good hand-held pump that can be used manually or electrically called the Isis iq Uno. This will cost you roughly $150.
So I guess my recommendation is: If you will be pumping regularly get the Medela, if not get the Avent. Best of Luck!

I agree, MEDELA, I work in a neonatal ICU and all they carry are Medela pumps. I'm also currently pumping as I type this with my medela pump. Any of the medela pumps would be fine but from experience make sure its a double pump, it will save you time and your sanity. I agree also with buying used
and buying your parts. If that isn't possible, a lot of stores will allow layaway, which is what I had to do.The prices on the parts were flanges $12-20 for two, bottles are adapting so buy what you like, connectors $10-20. Pump $200-300 totally
worth it!! It can easily be put away for your next child and costs less than formula. :)
BREAST PUMP RENTAL- call your OB they may know who rent them out. Depending on where you live?? Call your hospital and talk to the lactation consultant for sure she will have a list of all who rent out pumps.

The hospital grades are best. But for a home pump -medela - around 300
Where you or the father work, the company might be enrolled in something called a lactation program, where they can get you huge discounts on new pumps. If you're also concerned about costs, get a used pump, and new attachments. Thats perfectly sterile as the machinery has nothing to do with the milk, only the attachments do.

I liked my Medela Pump in Style Advanced. It's expensive, retailing at $320 but it has a nice let down feature that helped me out a lot. I was trying to get my milk supply back up from only a drop or two and I managed to get it to a full tablespoon within 2 weeks. Unfortunately, it never increased after that, but it was just my body, not the pump itself.
I would not invest in those cheap pumps because they break easily. I had an evenflo pump that lost suction after a month.
Manual pumps are hard because your hand cramps up. Dual electrics are the best.
Ameda Purely Yours was my second choice, and I've heard only good things about that. It retails for under $200.

Medela in Style- I exclusively pumped for my daughter until she was one- I never had any problems and I used mine at at least 2 hours a day. I plan on using it again (hopefully I will not have to pump exclusively) if I get pregnant again. I am sure it will work fine then too.

Medela "Pump in Style" model, it's an electric double pump, costs about $270... expensive but it definitely saves you pumping time.

I use the Lansinoh double electric breast pump and it works great! It was $150.00 and you can get it online at www.target.com or at some Target stores. It is so easy to use and easy to put together and comes with a dvd to help you. I love it.
